A typographic exercise: bringing an old-school magazine online

The Reportér is a Czech weekly magazine renowned for deep insights into politics and culture. It also features long-read interviews with prominent theatre, music, and arts figures.

Josef

The Reader

He's around fifty and reads on large screens, as well as mobile devices.

Interviews, polls, and analytics showed us who the magazine's readers are. They like long, visually engaging articles that go well beyond the surface. They also need the content to be highly readable.

Persona

To ensure text legibility in all circumstances, I defined its size using viewing angles rather than pixels or ems.

According to the ISO standard 9241-303:2011, the recommended text size is 20–22 arc minutes. For a given angle, we can calculate the text height (h) for any viewing distance:

h = 2 × viewing distance × tan(viewing angle / 2)

Based on these calculations, I created my own typographic system, which I used throughout the website.
